Julian Harrison

Julian has carved the lettering into a piece of 'Andaman Padauk' (from the Andaman Islands off Burma).  It is the remains of a burr (a rounded outgrowth on a tree trunk or branch that is filled with small knots from dormant buds).  This feature is very sought after in high quality cabinet making and the veneers are often seen on the dashboards of classic cars.  This piece was bought from a firm of veneer cutters and is the remains of the burr after the veneer pieces had been sliced off.

The rich colour of the wood and the complexity of the grain which Julian has polished, makes a wonderful background, although the wood is extremely hard and difficult to cut.  The piece is a testament to his skill (and courage)! in carving the lettering so beautifully.  It is a very individual and satisfying example of Julian's art.
