A ceramic artist for over twenty years, John Parkes aims to capture some of the character and nature of the subject in pieces that are neither too stylised nor over-realistic. His clifftop home in West Cornwall is close to the habitat of the birds and animals he re-creates in stoneware clay. More recently he has started making fishing boats, which are simply decorated with slips or glazes mixed with coloured stains and applied to the hulls to suggest reflections and weathering.
